LABORATÓRIO DE HUMANIDADES DIGITAIS, IHC, NOVA-FCSH

Desde a década de 1990, o Instituto de História Contemporânea (IHC) desenvolve atividades, projetos e investigações no âmbito das Humanidades Digitais. Em 2019, lográmos formalizar a criação do Laboratorio de Humanidades Digitais (Lab_HD) associado à NOVA-FCSH da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.
A missão do Lab_HD é proporcionar um espaço interdisciplinar para o qual convergem diferentes saberes e metodologias da área das Artes e das Humanidades (história, arte, literatura, arqueologia, música, geografia, etc.) e das Ciências Computacionais, com vista à realização de atividades de formação e capacitação, projetos de investigação, apoio aos investigadores, organização de eventos científicos e colaborações nacionais e internacionais.
A aplicação de metodologias digitais à investigação, ao ensino e à divulgação das Artes e das Humanidades em geral tem crescido nas últimas décadas, quer no impacto conseguido no âmbito dessas áreas científicas quer no número de investigadores que recorrem a metodologias ou a dados digitais para realizar os seus trabalhos e disseminar os seus resultados. No âmbito das atividades desenvolvidas, a exploração do potencial das bases de dados relacionais e dos Sistemas de Informação Geográfica (SIG) tem sido uma tendência.
Acompanhando a expansão das Humanidades Digitais, a atividade expandiu-se também e diversificou-se em termos temáticos, construindo pontes com a Geografia, a Sociologia, a Literatura e a Linguística e incorporando metodologias variadas. Além das bases de dados e dos SIG, avançou-se para a exploração da Web e das suas vertentes sociais (Web 2.0, 4.0, mash-ups), data-mining e análise de texto, linguística computacional, gestão de informação bibliográfica, técnicas de visualização de dados e crowdsourcing.
Foi também dada uma particular atenção à ligação com o ensino, tendo sido criada uma unidade curricular obrigatória na Licenciatura de História (desde 2002) e oferecidas formações específicas para docentes e investigadores de várias unidades de investigação e de cursos tanto na NOVA-FCSH como noutras instituições.
Acompanhando as tendências mundiais e europeias (i.e. em conformidade com as diretivas da i2010 Vision of a European Digital Library) desenvolveu-se a colaboração em projetos de digitalização e disponibilização online de fontes relevantes, bem como a criação de arquivos e bases de dados digitais. Os projetos “Atlas, Cartografia Histórica” (http://atlas.fcsh.unl.pt/) e “Atlas das Paisagens Literárias de Portugal Continental” (http://litescape.ielt.fcsh.unl.pt/) são apenas alguns dos exemplos neste domínio.
O Lab_HD tem por misão dimensionar, consolidar e aumentar o impacto e a sustentabilidade do caminho nas Humanidades Digitais realizado até hoje.

Since the 1990s, the Institute of Contemporary History (IHC) has been developing activities, projects and research in the field of Digital Humanities. In 2019, we were able to formalize the creation of the Digital Humanities Lab (DH_Lab) associated with NOVA-FCSH of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.
DH_Lab’s mission is to provide an interdisciplinary space where knowledge in the Arts and Humanities can converge with methodologies from the Computational Sciences. The Lab’s team will focus on training and skill building and supporting researchers; leading and collaborating in research projects. Other activities include organizing scientific events and pursuing national and international collaborative projects.
The application of digital methodologies to research, teaching and dissemination in the Arts and Humanities disciplines has grown in recent decades, both in the impact achieved in these scientific areas, and in the number of researchers that use methodologies or digital data to perform analysis and disseminate their results. The IHC was a pioneer in exploring the potential of relational databases and geographic information systems (GIS).
Accompanying the expansion of the Digital Humanities, recent work incorporated diverse methodologies and expanded its collaboration with other disciplines beyond history, namely geography, sociology, literature or linguistics. Recently there has been a focus on the Web and its social aspects (Web 2.0, 4.0, mash-ups). At the moment the team is working on data-mining and text analysis, computational linguistics, bibliographic information management, data visualization techniques and digital collaborative research.
Education has also been a particular focus of development, namely after the introduction of a requisite curricular unit for history undergraduates in 2002. Researchers from NOVA DH_Lab run in-house training for professors and researchers from NOVA-FCSH, as well as academy-wide training.
In the context of the i2010 Vision directives of the European Digital Library, members of the DH_Lab collaborated in digitization projects and online availability of relevant sources, as well as in the creation of digital archives and databases. The “Atlas, Historical Cartography” (http://atlas.fcsh.unl.pt/) and the “Atlas of Literary Landscapes of Mainland Portugal” projects (http://litescape.ielt.fcsh.unl.pt/) are just a few of the examples in this area.
The creation of the DH_Lab aims at combining past expertise gained by researchers in the field of DH in order to increase the impact and sustainability of the discipline at a national and international level.
